THE SUSTENANCE OF INFORMATION

and free access to the world wide web.
But the word "information" is a stark word, an abstraction. The treasures this building contains are much more real, more visceral, then the word "information" can convey. Every poem that was ever written down,

in every country,
by every poet in history.
History itself, kept alive
by the kind of retelling of immortal tales that books contain.
All the stories of men,
women,
children,
their animals,
their land,
the earth herself
and the sparkling, primoridal, breathing stars.
All the beguiling mythologies of ancient times,
and the modern mythologies of
science and mathematics.
Every painting,
every sculpture,
every tapestry,
every movie,
every TV show,
every comedy
and every tragedy
that life has offered,
anywhere in the world.
